Phil Rosenthal (of Everybody Loves Raymond) takes us on a tour of the city he lived in for half his life. It was fun to peek into a part of Phil’s life that truly shaped who he has become today.

#1 Peter Luger

somebody feed phil new york peter luger meat fridgeAll the way from Modena, Massimo Bottura joins Phil, Nancy Silverton, and Liz Hong of Osteria Mozza LA at Peter Luger, a high-end New York steakhouse. Established in 1887, this Williamsburg, Brooklyn steakhouse offers high quality meats cooked to perfection. They dine on a burger made with meat trimmings, juicy lamb chop, steak in its own juices and end with a butter ice cream sundae. They don’t stop there, they also have cheesecake and hot pecan pie with schlog (whipped cream). Peter Luger started as a German beer hall and has retained a lot of German influence.

#2 Totonno’s

Phil takes us to three pizza joints. The first stop is in Coney Island, Brooklyn with Ed Levine, who wrote a book on pizza. He takes Phil to Anthony “Totonno” Pero’s pizza joint, Totonno’s and we discover the true pioneer of pizza in NYC. Totonno originally made pies at Lombardi’s, another iconic pizzeria in New York.

#3 Di Fara

Dom Demarko and his partner created Di Fara in 1964. Expect to wait an hour for your pizza to be ready as it’s a one person operation.

#4 Razza

In Jersey City, Phil dines with Dom Lombardozi. Dan Ricker created Razza and offer traditional pies as well as pies of his own. Try the corn, scomorza cheese, shaved onions, and fresh mozzarella pizza and pork pie pizza inspired by soup dumplings

#5 Pilot Brooklyn

Phil and guests John Harris and Al Rucker join him on an the Pilot Brooklyn, located in the New York Harbor.  They have fresh oysters with oyster blogger Julie Qiu and Chef Kerry Heffernan.

#6 Central Park

Phil and Monica peruse around Central Park with tour guide Steve Cones. Central Park is a fully designed park with many vistas.  Everywhere you look there is a view you won’t forget.

#7 White Gold Butchers

Erica and Josslyn run the White Gold butcher ship on upper west side. Phil invites comedian Judy Gold for breakfast. They dine on a slew of sandwiches including: bacon egg and cheese, beef pastrami, reuben,  homemade hotdogs with kimchi sauerkraut, beef buttered roast beef, and chopped jalapeño cheese burger. I am getting full just watching them eat.

#8 Zabar’s

Zabar’s is a German deli that has been around since 1934 and is representative of NYC’s old culture. Phil and Judy go on a wild shopping spree and interact with customers who probably think they’re a little cuckoo. It’s definitely an experience to have when you’re visiting NYC.

#9 Chef’s Club

Chef’s Club features a rotating performance space for chefs. JJ Johnson, a James Beard award  winner for his pan-African cuisine gets to be the star of the show when Phil visits. JJ creates a cuisine inspired by his Carribean roots–a roti recipe with beef rib and peanut butter sauce.

#10 Ganesh Temple

Located in Flushing Queens, the Ganesh Temple is a place for prayer and food. Rupa Balasubramanian joins Phil along with  Floyd Cardoz, owner and chef of Bombay Bread Bar, for a lavish spread of south Indian cuisine. South Indian cuisine consists of dosas, rotis and sauces. Most of the cuisine we know of in restaurants is Northern Indian and Pakastani influenced.

#11 Nathan’s Hot Dogs

You can’t visit Coney Island without trying Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs. Nathan’s is located in Coney Island, Brooklyn and hosts a hot dog eating contest every 4th of July.

#12 Ice and Vice

Phil and Elaine May, of Nickels and May, visit Ice and Vice and try all their flavors including peach jalapeno, yuzu coconut milk, Swedish fish, Mexican black vanilla with lava seasalt, buckwheat tumeric with butterscotch, opium den, and 9AM Vietnamese coffee with donut truffle. The 9AM wins the award for best flavor from Elaine.

#13 Russ & Daughters Appetizers

Phil and Tracy Morgan, comedian on SNL, sit down at Russ & Daughters Cafe, located around the corner from the original store. They have egg cream (selzter beverage), potato latkes, and thinly sliced salmon.

#14 Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park

somebody feed phil new york city ballerina picnic dancePhil meets ballerinas Georgina a soloist with the New York Ballet, Alina is with the American Ballet Theater, and Abigail is a freelance dancer and teacher. Phil invites them  to Central Park for a picnic. They eat Charles pan fried chicken, Faiccos giant sandwiches and chocolate egg cream, Kat’s Deli sandwich and Harry and Ida’s, and some Han Dynasty Dan Dan Noodles. Paulette Goto, Pastry Chef and New York Food Tour Guide joins them and brings a Somebody Feed Phil cake!

#15 Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Blue Hill at Stone Barns is located 1/2 hour north of manhattan stone barns was Dan Barber and his brother. Everything is made locally and within season. Chef Shaya and his wife Emily join Phil. They have vegetable sushi, beet hot dog, mushrooms cooked in a live compost and fish head with rice.

#15 Rosenthal Residence

Phil’s mom, Helen Rosenthal, makes matzo/matzah ball soup. Which is one of my most favorite dishes! A surprise guest, Daniel Boulud, makes an appearance and applauds Helen for her food.

#16 Monica and Phil Rosenthal Benches

The episode ends with Monica and Phil sitting on the benches that they bought one another in Central Park. How romantic!
