We’ll follow Phil Rosenthal on his exploration of Capetown, a coastal city in South Africa. Capetown is located at the southern-most tip of Africa and much of the culture was influenced by Dutch settlers during their colonization period. Phil gets to explore the uniqueness in the cuisine of Capetown.

#1 Carne SA

Carne SA is located in Capetown city center and is owned and operated by Italian Chef Giorgio Nava. The restaurant serves African game meat such as ostrich, Kudu, Impala and Oryx meat.  Phil dines with Giorgio and his girlfriend Mala Bryan, a model from St. Lucia.

#2 The Golden Dish

Phil seeks advice from Shaheen, a local Production Assistant, about his favorite place to teat. They head over to The Golden Dish to get a Gatsby. A Gatsby is a massively long sandwich with meat sauce, egg, salad, cheese, lettuce and french fries. Phil gets both the masala steak and chicken sandwiches. The sandwiches should definitely be shared, unless you’re very very hungry.

#3 Jarryd’s

Phil meets with Nelson Mandela’s grandson Zondwa and his wife Lindo Mandela at their favorite breakfast place. They have a delicious breakfast with eggs and meat. Phil learns that Zondwa created the Mandela Legacy Center to help support black businesses in South Africa.

#4 The Test Kitchen

In the Woodstock neighborhood within the Old Biscuit building lies a network of restaurants. Phil visits The Test Kitchen. Phil starts with craft cocktails made by “X” which include a Belvedere Flower made with basil syrup. Chef Luke Dale-Roberts of The Saxon then serves Phil some chicharrones and dip made from Guinness stout. The restaurant ambiance starts in the dark and then slowly shifts into a lighter room. They enjoy smoked seabass tartare on lemon compressed cucumber barley wafer crisps with horseradish cream snow with lovage oil, and pancetta wrapped sea scallops and sweet corn risotto with snow crab, and finally some belly meat.

As of March 2018, Chef Dale-Roberts has parted ways with and closed The Saxon.

#5 Hout Bay

#6 Fish on the Rocks

Phil and Lisa go dine on fish and chips (more specifically slop chips, which are the opposite of crunchy straight fries). They also try a deep water fish called snook at Fish on the Rocks.

#7 Honest Chocolate

Michael and Jack join Phil at Honest Chocolate! Chocolate is mostly grown and harvested in South Africa. Here, Phil has the best brownie he’s ever tasted.

#8 Bo-Kaap Neighborhood

Bo-Kaap is home to Muslim community going back centuries. The neighborhood has candy colored buildings that light up the community and reflect the Muslim culture. Phil meets with Faezza Abrahams who runs cooking classes and creates cuisines from her Cape-Malay heritage. They dine on chicken curry with roti (tortilla-like bread) and have cook sisters (similar to beignets) served with coffee for dessert.

#9 Mzoli’s Place

Located in the Guguletu township is Mzoli’s Place. They serve “braai,” or barbeque, and bring together people from all walks of life to eat and connect. Head in to choose your meats, take it over to the Grill Master, ironically named Weber, and let them cook the meat to your liking.

#10 Truth Coffee

South Africa is the birthplace of coffee. Phil heads over to Truth Coffee and enjoys a cold brew coffee tasting.

#11 Hout Bay Harvest Center

Phil visits the Hout Bay Harvest Center and connect with Helena Fagan, the director of an arts program at top of Bay Harbor Market. He also meets with instructors Chad, who produces music, choreography and more and Peter, a former student turned teacher and rapper.

#12 Melissa’s

Melissa’s is a local snack shop. They offer pies, jams and other delectable snacks. Definitely try the chocolate chip cookies, chocolate caramel muesli bar, . Phil shares his spoils with one of the employees who eventually becomes his friend.

#13 Babylonstoren Vineyard

Babylonstoren is a Dutch farm, winery and restaurant. Phil starts with breakfast (eggs salmon breakfast) and then a tour of the farmland with gardeners Gundula Deutschlander and Constance Stuurman. The farm has over 300 kinds of plants making it one of the most diverse farmlands. Phil tries spekboom (elephant food), radish, lindtseed, and even garlic from the garden.
