#1 Church of Our Savior

Phil meets Marie Olesen at Aamann’s Deli. They order a few smørrebrød (small open face sandwiches with delicious flavors “smeared” on it) and take them to Østre Anlæg Park. Chef Adam Aamann joins them for a lunch spread of smørrebrød.

#4 NOMA
NOMA is a upscale 2 star Michelin restaurant by René Redzepi and Thorsten Schmidt. It was unfortunately closed during Phil’s visit to Copenhagen. NOMA 2.0 opened in February 2019.

#5 Barr
Barr is a restaurant by Chef Thorsten Schmidt, the “Nordic Alchemist,” and René Redzepi. Phil tries baked cod fish that is bacon glazed 14 times and some schnitzel (fried meat patty). They also try frikadeller–delicious Danish meatballs.

#5 Amass Restaurant
Phil is joined by his family for his son, Ben’s birthday. They take a ferry ride over to visit Matt Orlando, a chef from San Diego, California. Matt created Amass and his cuisine is influenced by what’s grown no the farmland located on the restaurant grounds. Phil starts his visit exploring the farmland running through a field of alfalfa and tasting all the vegetation. Phil even gets to eat a salad made in the palm of his hand. In the kitchen, Matt and Phil create Amass’ famous fried chicken that is topped with vinegar powder. The dish is made from scratch using ingredients directly from the farmland. Phil also gets to make a novel dish aptly named Phil’s Frolicking Flowers.

#6 Maritime Nyttehaver
Anders Selmer, owner of Fiskebaren, takes Phil on a boat ride before heading to his restaurant. On the way they stop by the boat based Maritime Nyttehaver and visit Joachim Hjerl, who runs the sustainable seafood program and also teaches Phil about sustainable fishing and mussel harvesting.
#7 Fiskebaren
Fiskebaren is a sustainable seafood restaurant located in the meatpacking district. Anders Selmer, owner of Fiskebaren, takes him on a boat ride to the restaurant and they have oakwood smoked fish and chips, local fresh oysters and a Danish Lobster from Limfjorden, served with green strawberries, broad beans and parsley.

#8 Freetown Christiania
Freetown Christiania is a hippie’s paradise. Phil heads there with Matt Orlando and meets the hippies and squatters living in this self-sustaining community. Freetown has been operating since 1971. Many of the residents didn’t want to be recorded, so we’ll just have to explore Christiania and experience it for ourselves.

#9 Christiania Falafel Kebab
Matt takes Phil to a food cart located within Christiania for the best falafel sandwiches in town. You can get around Copenhagen on a Christiania cargo bike.

#10 Hija De Sanchez
Rosio Sanchez, former pastry chef at NOMA, brought Hija de Sanchez to Copenhagen. She makes tacos with most ingredients found locally and only a few ingredients from Mexico (corn and spices). The cheese is from Copenhagen and gooseberries are used in place of tomatillos for their tart flavor as a salsa. Rosio’s cod skin chicharron taco looks delicious. Rosio also makes Danish inspired Mexican paletas (ice cream pops).

#11 Superkilen Park
Bjarke Ingles, a Danish Architect known for his modern designs seen around the world, takes Phil to his favorite place and creation–Superkilen Park. Bjarke created this park to reflect the growing international community of Copenhagen. They surveyed the community to create a park that would identify icons from their home and at the same time the architect of inclusion. Here you can find a fiberglass octopus representative of Japan, an S-curved Mexican love seat, and a Moroccan tiled fountain. Bjarke also takes Phil to Old Hellerup High School (Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium) which Bjarke designed for future generations.

#12 Døp
Phil heads to Døp to try all seven organically produced hot dogs including the classic, pork with wild garlic, vegetarian dog, chicken, spicy beef with spicy ketchup, pork with cheese, and goat sausage with bacon. SO MANY DOGS!

#13 Balderdash
Balderdash is owned and operated by Geoffrey Canilao. The Rosio (of Hija de Sanchez) and Laura cocktail is a blended avocado beverage with freeze dried raspberries and salted grasshoppers on top. They also have a banana split infused with alcohol and drizzled with beaver castoreum/gland whipped cream and seaweed chocolate syrup. This sounds delectable!

#14 Tivoli Gardens
At Lily’s (Phil’s daugher) request, the Rosenthals head to Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli Gardens is one of the first amusement parks built in 1843. The park inspired Walt Disney, who took the experience and created Disney parks back in United States of America.

#15 Gasoline Grill
Klaus Wittrup created the Gasoline Grill after living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He fell in love with the juicy American burger which inspired hime to create his gas station themed restaurant. Phil tries the Whataburger, which is a burger topped with melted butter and pickles. Come here early because they have a fixed number of burgers to serve each day.

#16 NOMA Under the Bridge
Geoffrey, from Balderdash and his friend Suna surprise Phil with a NOMA pop up known as NOMA Under the Bridge. While the chefs of NOMA are waiting for NOMA 2.0 to open, they got together to make their favorite dishes at this special pop up. Phil gets to try shrimp tacos, smoked cod and seasoned potatoes.
