Phil Rosenthal (creator of Everybody Loves Raymond) trots over to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Buenos Aires is a port town. Europeans arrived to Buenos Aires through Rio de la Plata. Today Buenos Aires is a country of 17 million porteños (or people of the port). Phil is met with tango dancing, meat and the hospitality of the porteños.

#1 Martin Tata the Horse Whisperer

The episode opens with Phil and friends watching Martin Tata the Horse Whisperer perform an interesting choreography with his horse. I don’t get it either, but it is a little endearing.

#2 El Obrero

Phil meets with Sole Nardelli, a renown Argentinian chef, at a classic bodegone, or casual diner server traditional Argentinian food. Here, Phil gets to eat what the people eat: fried calamari and revuelto gramajo (ham scrambled eggs fried potatoes). The revuelto gramajo is traditionally a breakfast dish and reminds me of Chilean chorrillanas. Phil ends his meal with a dulce de leche (caramel) crisped pancake with ice cream on top.

#3 Los Galgos

Phil then meets with Rodolfo Reich, food Journalist for La Nacion, at Los Galgos. Julian Diaz took an old bar and restored it into a cafe that is now known for its on tap happy hour cocktails (cue the negronis) and various snack dishes. Dishes include marinated tongue, matambre (flank streak), a gigantic potato tortilla, and other dishes normally served during Christmas season in Argentina. They spend time discussing the culture of siestas in Argentina and afterwards, probably take one.

#4 Chori

Phil meets with Chicago expat turned food blogger, Allie Lazar of Pick Up the Fork. She introduces him to the quintessential choripan. Choripan is a chorizo sandwich. Chorizo means sausage and pan means bread. They try wild boar, and smoked choripans. Phil even explores their hot sauce. Hot sauce was not wildly popular in South America when I went back in 2014. Maybe things have changed and that’s a good thing! I can’t wait to go back and try it.

#5 La Recoleta

Phil visits the gorgeous La Recoleta cemetery in the very affluent neighborhood of La Recoleta. Mausoleums lie above the grounds and are for political figures and the wealthy. Eva Peron was buried here. Don’t cry for me Argentina!

#6 Peron Peron

Gonzalo Alderete is the chef of Peron Peron. Gonzalo shows Phil how to appropriately eat an empanada. Step 1: Shake your empanadas to get the juices distributed and then, Step 2: Bite into it like you’re kissing it. They also have grilled pacu (pa-koo), the cousin of the toothy piranhas, except they have human teeth! Finally they dine on steak that falls right off the bone.

#7 San Telmo Market

Mercado San Telmo is a bustling Argentinian market. You can find almost anything you need here. Find fresh chimichurri blends, colorful seltzer bottles and paintings and photos from local artists. There’s something for everyone.

#8 Narda Comedor

Narda Lepes, owner and chef at Narda Comedor, created a vegetable forward restaurant, which is the opposite of the Argentinian love for meat. Phil gets to try a napa cabbage salad and “Tofu trash,” a tofu dishes with Asian influence. Phil finally gets to try a meat dish at the end. Finally Phil tries a fruit salad (but don’t call it that in front of Narda) and chocolate cake filled with dulce de leche (caramel).

#9 Mishiguene

Tomás Kalica is the Chef and owner of Mishiguene, a Jewish restaurant in Buenos Aires. They have gafilte fish (blended fish in a tube), pastrami grano de pecho (underneck of cow) and their whole rib version served with pasta, and some vodka to finish the meal. L’chaim!

#10 La Catedral del Tango

Cecilia Piccini gives Phil a private tango lesson at La Catedral del Tango. We soon discover that Phil doesn’t have two left feet after all! As of April 2018, the cathedral of tango has been labeled as a historic cultural site in Buenos Aires.

#11 Tegui

I can’t even begin to describe the magic and mysteriousness that happens at Tegui. Phil gets to try a green strawberries with grilled oysters, watermelon onion relish drink with frog leg and frozen oregano olive oil, an anchovy kumquat with peach sauce, lemon infused olive oil and Jullian’s tortellini. Finally, Phil has a dessert of dulce de leche cake dehydrated for two months and then topped with a 7 cereal ice cream.

#12 Estancia El Ombu de Areco

Phil then meets with Felicitas Pizarro, an Argentinian food YouTuber and blogger. Felicitas and Phil experience an authentic asado, or bovine barbeque prepared by gauchos (Argentinian cowboys), at the Estancia El Ombu de Areco. Afterwards the gauchos induct Phil to become one of their own. You’ll need to make a reservation to dine here.

#13 Cucina Paridiso

Half of the population of buenos aires is of Italian descent, however Italian food is not as prevalent as other cuisines. Chef Donato de Santis owns Cucina Paridiso and serves authentic pasta dishes in Buenos Aries. Phil and Donato dine on agnolotti con el plin made with Puglia braised lamb, orecchiette and cavatelli maritatta (marriage of two pastas). I cannot wait to go back and dine on Italian food in Buenos Aires.

#14 La Mezetta

Donato then takes Phil to La Mezetta where pizza is loaded with cheese and tons of flavor! You won’t get sauce here because cheese. Bring your own napkins to clean up afterwards, or else you’re wiping your hands with sheets of paper.

#15 NOLA

NOLA is owned by Liza Puglia. She moved from New Orleans to serve porteños a New Orleans fare in the heart of Buenos Aires. NOLA’s fried chicken is juicy, crispy, spicy and flavorful. Phil also tries their chicken parmesan. If it’s good, smile and say “ache de pé!” to the chef.

#16 Don Julio Parilla

Don Julio is a renown steakhouse in Buenas Aires with multiple awards and mentions. Phil invites Julian and fixers, Carola and Sole, for some steak dinner. They start with mollejas, or “sweet bread,” and then follow with a “jugoson” (juicy) t-bone, skirt steak and ribeye.

#17 Julian’s Home
