Travel

If you’re planning to rent a car, there are a few things to keep in mind. They drive on the left-hand side of the road for starters, and it’s illegal not to wear a seatbelt. For folks with young kiddos, it’s the law to use proper child restraints. Call your rental car place in advance to see if you can rent a car seat, otherwise, you may need to travel with one. You can use travel apps to plan your travel.

Accommodations

Plan ahead by pre-booking your hotel. You’ll want to do this regardless to make sure they can accommodate children. B&Bs tend to be kid-free while hostels cater to backpackers; limiting your choices. If you’re in need of kid supplies: playpen, cot or highchairs, you’ll need to book with a mid-to-high priced hotel and reserve these items in advance!

Research Children’s Activities in Advance

There are a number of websites at your disposal to browse for upcoming kid-friendly events per region. Many of these sites will also identify family restaurants and other notables. Before you depart, make sure there’s plenty of activities available for the whole family to enjoy!

Cultural Studies

Toss in some education and take your kids on a field trip to expose them to New Zealand’s vibrant culture. Take in art and museum exhibits in Te Papa, Auckland or Canterbury. Explore the history and culture of the Maori people in Rotorua. Go to the birthplace of New Zealand in Waitangi or take a steam train ride back in time to explore the gold rush in Shantytown.

Get touristy and partake in some cultural elements in between taking in an All Blacks rugby game or whatever adventures you have in store from exploring caves to sitting in a jacuzzi or hitting the streets for some sightseeing and shopping.
