Phil (producer of Everybody Loves Raymond) visits Venice, Italy. The people are Venice are refugees who fled from Atilla the Hun and created this city surrounded by canals. Phil returns to reunite with old friends and re-explore the beautiful city on water. He also makes a quick stop in Modena and we can observe how drastic the cuisines can change from one region to the next.

#1 Cantine del Vino già Schiavi
Phil meets with his American friend Laura Sousounis and they go on a cicchetti crawl around Venice. Their first stop is Cantine del Vino già Schiavi. Cicchetti are little bites of food on bread and look similar an open faced sandwich. He starts with baccala (olive oil and cod) and then has an interesting cicchetti with tuna topped with cacao powder. Alessandra, owner and chef at Schiavi, has owned and operated the spot for over 60 years.

#2 Venice Canal
Phil and Laura go on a boat trip. They pass the Rialto Bridge.

#3 La Bottega dei Mascareri
Laura takes Phil to a traditional mask shop owned and operated by Sergio Boldrin. There are two locations in Venice.

#4 Osteria All’Arco
This place really doesn’t need an introduction. Located in the heart of the Rialto market, it’s frequented by locals, workers and also by many foreigners. Francesco and his son Matteo have a rotating cicchetti menu–and every day is different!

#5 Acqua & Mais
The best street food can be found at Acqua & Mais. Come here for the calamari and shrimps served in paper cones.

#6 Boutique del Gelato
Gelato (Italian ice cream) made by Alessandra (a different one). Phil gets to try chocolate, passion fruit, blackberry and even buys ice cream for some fans he runs into from the Philippines.

#7 Vini da Arturo
Vini da Arturo has been around since 1968. Phil comes here for their famous fried pork chop. They also serve Phil other dishes such a fresh mix of eggplant in vinegar, onion, pine nuts and grapes, a 44 year old dish that has not lost its charm. Phil also tries a blend of mushroom potatoes onions and sour cream. Finally, Phil gets his pork chop and it’s as good as he remembered. Disclaimer: They refuse to serve fish at Vini da Arturo and stick what what they know.

#8 Gondola
Phil meets with Anna, a Gondaliere, who teaches him how to row down the Venice canals.

#9 Torrefazione Cannaregio
Phil meets with Luca Marchiori, food writer and Astorian. They head to Torrefazione Cannaregio for a warm espresso. The coffee culture started in Venice in 1570.

#10 Al Covo
Al Covo is a short walk from Pizza San Marco. The restaurant is owned by Cezere and his wife Diane from Texas. Their son Lorenzo and his girlfriend Tatiana join them. They dine on boiled baby and mantis shrimps, hollowed spider crab with pasta, and sole gentile (gentle sole).

#11 Mercado Albinelli
Phil’s friend and tour guide, Caterina Schenetti, head to Mercado Albinelli and try out all the parmesan cheeses.

#12 La Consorteria 1966
La Consorteria 1966 is a place where you can buy official Balsamic vinegar. Phil and Caterina sample a 12 and then 25 year aged vinegar.

#13 Emilia Cremeria
An associate from Emilia Cremeria comes over and offers their feur de latté (flower milk) ice cream topped with cherrywood vinegar. This looks and sounds unique and delicious.

#14 Bar Tiffany
Phil and Caterina meet with Andrea, a tour guide living in the Modena area, and try gnocco fritto, a doughnut like pastry made with pig fat (strutto) and then dipped into a latté. Afterwards they eat a breakfast of gnocchi de mortadella, salami and raw prusciotto Antonio–all served with gnocco fritto. Bar Tiffany seems to be the place to go!

#15 Food for Soul
Phil meets Massimo Bottura at his home. Massimo was featured on Chef’s Table and his restaurant, Osteria Francescana is one of the world’s best restaurants. They take a trip to Massimo’s soup kitchen called Food for Soul, where Massimo serves the most needy and hungry.

#16 Ristretto
Massimo then takes Phil to Ristretto where they enjoy an espresso.

#17 Da Panino
Da Panino serves sliced cured meats and wines. Phil and Massimo have some Lambrusco and mortadella before they head over to Osteria Francescana.

#18 Osteria Francescana
Phil gets an exclusive experience and dines in the kitchen of Osteria Francescana. He eats a full course menu starting with 5 ages (ways) of parmesan, sea “salad” that takes a week to make, sole en papillote, pigeon meatballs, and much more. I would love to be Phil right now!
It was also such a refreshing look to see Massimo display a playful and carefree attitude when interacting with Phil.

#19 Last Dinner with Friends
Phil has a farewell dinner hosted by Dario Cecchini (famous butcher) and his wife Trudy. Other guests include Silvana Vivoli (gelato maker), and Jim Lahey from Sullivan Street Bakery in NYC. The crew surprises Phil with a dover sole served with a side of chestnut soufflé.

Absolutely love this show… I am an avid traveler and I love the upbeat nature of the visits with the locals… so great! Plan to go to Venice in September and will visit all locations mentioned.
