Phil Rosenthal visits a major city in Israel, Tel Aviv, for a foodie filled excursion along the Mediterranean coast. In this episode Phil visits over 20 locations and dines on Israeli food and food influenced by neighboring cultures that make up the people of Israel. Phil is joined by friends who become family.

#1 Dr. Shakshouka

Phil reunites with the Israeli version of “Everybody Loves Raymond” Producer Daniel Lapin and Actor Yuval Yaniv for shakshouka stew and lamb shawarma for breakfast. The recipe was handed down from Dr. Shakshouka‘s father while he was incarcerated. Dr. Shakshouka carries on his fathers recipe and all food is made and served by the Doctor himself in a 250 year old building.

#2 Carmel Market

Phil and Michael Solomonov, an Israeli Chef and owner of Zahav in Philadelphia, USA head through the Carmel Market and embark on a grand foodie tour led by the Solonov himself.

#3 Hummus HaCarmel

Hummus HaCarmel serves a hummus dish (blended garbanzo beans) made with various ingredients that reflect influences and ingredients from the different cultures surrounding the Israeli area. The restaurant is synagogue themed and a lot of people confuse it for actually having previously existed as a synagogue. It’s a great vegetarian dish and vegan if you omit the egg.

#4 Abu Hassan

Abu Hassan is a restaurant where everyone goes for traditional Israeli cuisine and delicious hummus. There’s always a line out the door. Once you’re in, place your order and swallow your meal down. The owner is constantly moving customers through to feed the frenzy outside. You’ll hear someone yell “yalla yalla” to move diners along.

#5 Sabich

Phil and Solonov head to Sabich where they eat a delicious fried eggplant sandwich, known as “sabich.” Sabich is an Iraqi vegetarian dish.

#6 Shimon the King of Soups

Now run by the King’s daughter, the restaurant serves kosher Yemini style soup. They use every part of the animal and serve delicious stews made with cheekbones, oxtail, gizzard and offal.

#7 Bike Path

Phil explores the city via bike path from Tel Aviv to Yafo and throughout the city medians. You can rent a city bike through the Tel-O-Fun bike program.

#8 Rothschild Coffee Kiosk

Phil visits the Rothschild Coffee Kiosk in White City, Tel Aviv. He befriends two residents and learns about the culture in Tel Aviv. Rothschild draws you in with their display of baked goods. Menus are offered in both English and Hebrew, and presents a selection of breakfast items, salads, and sandwiches. You’ll want to stop here on your stroll down Rothschild Boulevard.

#9 Port of Jaffa

The Port of Jaffa is one of the oldest ports in the world.

#10 Abu Lafia Bakery

Abu Lafia Bakery has been around for centuries. It is a family owned breakfast with amazing breads. Many people come here for breakfast.

#11 Zakaim

Phil meets with Steven Rothfeld, author of the book Israel Eats, for vegan Israeli cuisine at Zakaim. Zakaim is a Persian style vegan restaurant owned by Harel and his two sisters. Phil eats a ricotta dish made with soy milk and salt, cauliflower gundy chips and grilled mushroom skewers that taste exactly like meat.

#12 Krav Maga Lessons

Phil takes a Krav Maga self defense class at the park. Phil is now a deadly weapon.

#13 Mashya

Chef Yoshih Shihtrit of Mashya serves Moroccan influenced Israeli cuisine in a modern way. Daniel and TV Host Ruthie Russo join Phil for a tasting menu. First up in a shakshouka mini pizza with micro coriander, then cauliflower stuffed with lamb kebab, sashimi tuna salad with wheat salad and complete with a toasted grapefruit marshmallow dessert finale.

#14 Ha-Medina Square

Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, who was planning to kill all the Jews. It is celebrated on the 14th and 15th of the 12th month of the Jewish calendar, which usually coincides with March. Phil says its likes a Halloween, rave, and West Hollywood parade combined. Here you can see people celebrating at Ha-Medina Square in Tel Aviv. Sounds fun!

#15 Gan Ha’ir Mall

Phil heads to the Gan Ha’ir Mall where elderly women continue the tradition of meeting meet weekly to socialize. Phil brings them cookies but none of them are interested his offering. He is able to blend the groups together at one table and they become friends!

#16 Shuk HaNamal and Sherry Herring

Michal Ansky, a journalist and gastronomist in Israel, takes Phil to Shuk HaNamal, Tel Aviv’s port market with over 70 vendors. Ansky started the market in 2010 and it has since brought delicious produce to the area. She also takes him to Sherry Herring where Phil eats a herring sandwich served with a shot of vodka. L’chaim!

Note: Sherry is Ansky’s mother. And the sandwich looks like Vietnamese banh mi.

#16 Caesarea

Phil heads north of Tel Aviv to Caesarea. Caesarea is a national park with ancient Roman ruins (10 B.C.), beautiful beaches, and impressive modern residences. Caesarea was originally an ancient Herodian port city located on Israel’s Mediterranean Coast about halfway between Tel Aviv and Haifa.

#17 Galilee

Further north is Galilee. Solonov invites Phil to a resort, Mizpe Hayamim Hotel, that is also an organic farm. Gai Leznitsky runs the farm and restaurant on the resort. The harvest veggies, cheese and duck from the area.

#19 Acre Old City Market

Uri of Uri Buri restaurant takes Phil through the people’s market. The market is very artisanal and sell products made from within and for the community it serves. They snack on a falafel sandwich known as the “golden ball” from a nearby food cart. The uniqueness about their falafel is that it is made with preserved lemon.

#20 Uri Buri Restaurant

Uri Jeremias (known by his restaurant name: Uri Buri) takes Phil to his seafood restaurant in Acre (pronounced Akko) and shares his notable dishes with Phil; smoked aubergine (eggplant) and roe Spanish Mackerel with nigella on toast, salmon sashimi with wasabi sorbet, and the “OMG” (Orange/Mango/Grapefruit) sorbet ice cream with olive oil on top. It will make you say OMG out loud. He also goes deep into conversation about what makes Acre safe – and Uri explains that it’s everyone’s respect for one another.

#21 Michael Solonov’s Family Home

Solonov invites Phil over for a BBQ at his family home. The meal combines cuisines from various cultures that make up the people in Solonov’s family.

  2. I am shocked. That wasn’t a food show at all, very politicle agenda. May I correct you Mr. Phil, Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel, not Tel-Aviv! I was very sad seeing the show about your ‘culinary’ experience in Israel.
